Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of Ava DuVernay took place on the 24th day of August on the 24th of August, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise at the age of a small child. The aunt was on during the night shifts as a nursing assistant to ensure she could pursue her love for theater and art throughout the day. DuVernay instantly fell in love after showing her that 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay was taught by her the power of art as a vehicle for activism. Her mother was also a an awareness of social issues and showed DuVernay how to communicate via art. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born and raised. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historical Civil Rights march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring town Selma Alabama. DuVernay was influenced by her time in Selma to later direct a documentary about King's father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated with a high school diploma in Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. After graduating she attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English and African American studies. DuVernay began producing for the broadcast industry while she was still at the college. DuVernay began her career as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to the look-out and search for the house of an individual Jury member. In the course of her work she was dissatisfied with journalism, and shifted into the publicity business. DuVernay was hired straight from college to be an assistant publicist in an unassuming studio. She started The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999. The agency was the first to launch a variety of promotions and lifestyle channels which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
